Summary
Looking for guest teachers who want to record migration stories for our project in schools with children between 10 and 14 years old and migrant elderly.Detailed description
Go in search of migration stories with young and old!
The Emigration Generation is a project in Utrecht that, together with children between the ages of 10 and 14, records the migration stories of Utrecht residents who have come here from other countries in the past. Through guest lessons at school, children are introduced to the concept of 'migration' and the history of migrant elders from their city. These 'grandparents' are then interviewed by the children and their stories are recorded. In this way, the stories are returned to the elderly and shared as widely as possible with residents of the city. By recording these migration stories, we visualize our shared history and generate attention for migration in general and migrant older people in particular. In this way we connect generations, we transcend prejudice and segregation and we give a face to residents in the city.
The emigration generation is looking for volunteers who
Like to give guest lectures on migration in primary schools, to interview migrant elders about their arrival in the Netherlands together with the students and to guide children to turn these interviews into a nice story
School year 2020 we are going to collect stories again! Will you help?
We are looking for
- You are interested in the world of children. You know how to make them curious about the themes of migration and (family) history
- You are open to people from other cultures and from other generations. You can work culture sensitive (or want to learn to)
- You like to tell and even more fun to listen to people
- You are social, inviting and see opportunities to involve people in a conversation
- You can always make yourself available for a trajectory period of three half-days (often afternoons during the week)
- You think commitment is important and you like to enter into a process with a group
We offer
- A training in which you learn to work according to the emigration generation method
- Professional guidance by our project leader
- The opportunity to gain experience in front of the class/group and with project work
- The chance to hear these extraordinary migration stories first hand and help capture them for generations to come

About De emigratie generatie
The emigration generation goes to schools, gives guest lessons there, and together with the students we talk to grandfathers and grandmothers in the neighborhood about their coming to the Netherlands, and their further life story.
The children turn these stories into a beautiful product (newspaper, poetry collection, poster ...) that is returned to the elderly during a festive moment. We also want to tell the stories we get permission to share in the neighborhood and in the city.
We also create stories with groups of migrant elderly. Together we recall memories, record them in words and images, and the elderly organize a festive gathering in which they share their own stories with their immediate environment; children, grandchildren, the neighborhood.
