What does Critical Mass do?
Critical Mass develops interactive exhibitions, multimedia installations, films and games that open eyes and make people reflect on their own attitude and behaviour. In this way we get conversations going and we activate people to commit themselves to an inclusive society. We do this in as many places in society as possible: within education, in museums, for municipalities and in the business market.
Critical Mass consists of a small but close-knit team in the office and a large, broad layer of trainers/discussion leaders and developers around it. With our working method, we bring air to heated social debates in an innovative way, we bridge differences and we apply techniques that can be used for various themes: from war to social security, and from social fears to diversity and inclusion.
What is the role of the board?
The board of Critical Mass currently consists of 4 members and is ultimately responsible for all activities of the foundation. The preparation and implementation of the policy is delegated to the director and an operational team by means of management and management regulations. The board discusses progress 4 to 6 times a year and makes an important contribution to vision formation and the development and maintenance of a network for Critical Mass. These consultations usually take place at the office of Critical Mass in Utrecht. In addition, the board is available by telephone and e-mail for questions, advice and decisions that need to be taken in the short term.
The board members work on a voluntary basis and only receive compensation for expenses incurred. Members are appointed for a term of 4 years, with the possibility to extend for a maximum of 1 term.
What duties does the treasurer perform?
The treasurer has a controlling function and, together with the director and business employee, ensures clear financial information for the board (several times a year). If necessary, the treasurer thinks along about the organization of the financial administration and advises on the preparation of budgets and settlements for projects (both internally and externally). Finally, the treasurer acts as a source of information for questions of a financial nature from the board, the accountant and the management of Critical Mass.
What do we look for in a treasurer?
- Good numerical insight and experience with financial policy of (non-)profit organizations; experience with financial policy within the cultural or non-profit sector is an advantage;
- Has knowledge and insight into financial processes, knows how to advise other directors on budget and annual accounts, etc., knows what information is needed to follow and control financial policy;
- An accessible sparring partner for the director and business employee;
- Good communication and social skills;
- A great sense of responsibility and an honest personality;
- Experience (as treasurer) within a board and a relevant network is a clear advantage.
More information and comments
Critical Mass and her team want to be a reflection of society, within which different perspectives and backgrounds are represented. Because of the important themes and the complex issues we work on with diverse target groups, we are looking for (societal) critical talent who brings different perspectives.
