Summary
As a Language Fun Volunteer at primary school you work weekly with small groups of students from groups 5-8 to increase their language enjoyment and language level.Detailed description
At some primary schools in Utrecht, the student population is largely multilingual, with a number of children lagging behind in Dutch. A school day of 5.5 hours is too short for these children to get a fair chance in secondary education.
We can do something about this!
Together with the primary school and active parents, we want to give students the opportunity to get started with language after school, in order to increase both their language enjoyment and their language level. Supervision takes place in small groups at the school. Parents provide tea and keep the peace, and language volunteers use their coaching skills to stimulate language development.
What do you do as a Language Volunteer at primary school?
After following an introductory course and professional development about, among other things, teaching methods, you start with supervision. This guidance focuses on increasing vocabulary and reading comprehension. For example by playing language games or reading a text. We have contact with the teachers at school so that the guidance is in line with the development in the classroom. You will be supervised by the project leader with whom you regularly coordinate on the progress and your own development as a language volunteer. You can contact the language consultant for language input and didactic tips.
What do you have at home?
- You have an affinity with children, education, language and cultures
- You want to work practically for equal opportunities for all children
- You love language and are good at guiding and enthusing groups of children
- You are eager to learn, independent and reliable
- You are available for about two hours a week in the afternoons
- You are willing to commit for a period of a school year
- You are willing to develop and participate in an in-depth workshop or training.
What do you get in return?
Through your efforts, you contribute to ensuring that language no longer forms a barrier to a child's school development. Language skills and reading pleasure are indispensable for a good preparation for secondary school and for being able to participate in Utrecht society later on. After all, you need language to make friends, find a job, do your banking or do your homework. Meaningful work with a major social impact! At the same time, you get to know other cultures, you get a lot of enthusiastic Taal Doet Meer colleagues and you can develop through various appropriate training courses.
