Description courses & pitches:

Elective course 'Pain', teacher: Anneke van Houwelingen (Pharmacy)

Pain from a scientific and social context" bachelor students study the theme of pain from five different perspectives (biomedical, philosophical, art, psychological and anthropological perspective). Within the project (education) "Ease the pain" the students themselves look for a (external) partner to start and carry out a project together. The project is structured in consultation with the partner and can include various forms (including research, social media use, game design).

Course 'City Studio', teacher: Irina van Aalst (Social Geography and Planning)

“In the city studios, students (BA Social Geography and Planning) learn and work with social partners, organizations and residents in the city. In this way they actively contribute to a city of and for everyone (an inclusive city). Stadsstudio projects are aimed, among other things, at the accessibility of public spaces, at social safety and networks in neighbourhoods, at the availability of housing and the presence of tourist facilities. Examples include the daily life of students on campus and the effects of gentrification on sedentary residents.

With the previously acquired knowledge and skills, students can contribute to urban and regional challenges and, together with social partners, determine what a sensible intervention is (co-creation).”

Course 'Knowledge for society', lecturer(s): Berteke Waaldijk and Jocelyn Ballantyne (Humanities)

In the 'Knowledge for Society' course, Bachelor's students look for social partners with or before they can work together. They study cultural sciences (languages, communication, history, religion, gender, media, art, theatre, gender, philosophy, music) and they want to use their knowledge in a (internship) project in which they work for or with an organization that benefits from their skills and insights. They design a project together with a partner (find something, design something, write something, interview, make a podcast, help with a grant application) and if it clicks, they also carry out that project.

Course 'Designing Interactive Systems', teacher: Christof van Nimwegen (Computer Science)

In the Designing Interactive Systems (OIS) course, students become acquainted with human-centred design : designing systems that closely match the activities, wishes and values of users and clients. Assignments from non-profit organizations and institutions offer students the opportunity to develop their knowledge and skills in a realistic setting. Clients are given the opportunity to have new plans and ideas tried out by a number of student groups. Their designs are used as inspiration for the further development process.

About Buurthuis de Nieuwe Jutter

Welcome to Buurthuis De Nieuwe Jutter, the community center by and for the neighbourhood!

We are a community center in Rivierenwijk in Utrecht. A special community center because we, the residents of Rivierenwijk, manage this community center together. We want our Nieuwe Jutter to be a place where people like to come to meet others and where they feel welcome. Many volunteers are committed to this.

Meetings take place over a cup of coffee or a drink, during meals and during the various activities that people organize themselves in our community centre. Whoever you are, wherever you come from and however you think: everyone is welcome. We do expect visitors to show respect for each other and to adhere to our house rules.

Activities that are organized range from yoga class, line dance and choir to billiards, folk dancing, Arabic class, Arabic homework support, cards and much more. And don't forget the festive evenings, neighborhood meals, Iftar and Whitsun meal. Our community center is also involved in the annual neighborhood party and the neighbors day. In the past year De Nieuwe Jutter was twice the place where it was possible to say goodbye to a deceased local resident.

In addition to the regular activities, the community center is open as a workplace for freelancers, for meetings, courses, lectures, conferences or other gatherings.
