Summary

Do you like language and do you have an affinity with young people and other cultures? Do you think it is important that all students get equal opportunities in education?

Detailed description

What is language mentorship online?

The Language mentorship project is aimed at young people whose language skills are an obstacle in school development. Language skills and reading pleasure are indispensable for good progress at school and to be able to participate in Utrecht society later on. After all, you need language to make friends, find a job or do your homework.

What do you do as an online language mentor?

As a language mentor, you individually supervise a Utrecht student from a foreign-speaking family on a weekly basis. You do this completely online via Skype, Teams or another online program.

After following an introductory course, you start guiding the youngster (pupil). This guidance lasts 20 weeks and focuses on increasing reading pleasure and language skills by getting started with language in an accessible and enjoyable way. You do this by, for example, reading books together, chatting or thinking along with the homework.

In addition, you will be guided by a voluntary mentor coordinator with whom you regularly coordinate about progress, contact with your pupil and your own development. The pupil is registered by his / her school, so that we can work well together with the school. Where necessary, coordinate with the school.

Experience with guiding (young people) is not necessary, enthusiasm is!

About Taal Doet Meer

Taal Doet Meer, with 1000 volunteers per year, ensures that Utrecht residents can participate in society. Learning the Dutch language is a common thread in our work. Language is necessary to find a job, talk to your children's teacher, go to the doctor, work with a computer or do your homework.

Voluntary language coaches offer language coaching and activation to men and women who do not have Dutch as their mother tongue. Our volunteer mentors support students with language and schoolwork. They receive extra support to make a good start in first year and when doing homework.

Our work benefits everyone involved: students get to know the language and society. Students perform better in school. Volunteers broaden their horizons, develop their social skills and contribute to understanding and cohesion within Utrecht society.
