''Rainbow Elders'' : do I (re) know them? and how can I support them?

Many organizations say: 'We make no distinction' or 'Everyone is welcome with us'.

Due to this attitude, which is intended to be positive in principle, making the subject negotiable is still experienced as difficult.

By not making a distinction, the specific needs or problems are not or insufficiently seen, recognized and acknowledged. This while about 5% of the elderly go through life as an LGBTI person (lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender, the intersex).

Contents:

Recognizing (specific needs of) LGBTI+ elderly people requires a safe environment. Due to their increasing frailty and dependence, the elderly are less inclined to identify themselves as belonging to a minority group.

A visibly accepting environment is important to discuss the meaning of the subject in the personal life of the older person.

In this workshop we will use an interactive method (including quiz, information, music) to discuss the everyday reality of LGBTI elderly people and their volunteers.
